How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

The tradition of making a New Year’s resolution is easy to do, but not always easy to keep. Why does this happen and how can we prevent it from happening again? Once you are aware of the steps it’s simple and you’ll be making multiple ones and achieving them all.

1. Pick goals that are achievable to reach.

For example: I want to run a marathon one day.

That is ambitious to say the least, but achievable if you are already an avid runner. However you may have never ran and your friends have participated in marathons and want you to try running with them. You’re already fit but don’t run at all. A much more reasonable idea is to have a resolution to try to make running a part of your exercise routine. It’s all in the wording you choose.

Revised goal: You will try to run.

So if you try it and it does not suit you for any reason, you’ve still accomplished your goal by simply attempting to run.

2. Pick goals that you are currently working towards.

Most people have goals that they are trying to achieve all the time.

3. If you make multiple resolutions for the year, only make a few and accomplish them before adding more.

What you think you can handle and reality may be different. Outside forces such as weather, people canceling arrangements or a number of other things can determine if you execute the plan. If you make only a few goals at a time and accomplish them before piling on more, you give yourself extra time to compensate for it taking longer than you thought to do an activity.

4. Allow the goal to be revised until you know exactly what you have to do to reach your end game.

For example: I want to self publish my first novel which is already written.

Once you consult with an editor, you realize you still have many corrections to make.

Revision: I want to edit my story so that it is the best possible version of the novel.

I hope you achieve all the goals you set this year and for many years to come. Try to surround yourself with those who encourage and support you. It will make the journey of reaching your ambitions that much more fulfilling.
